Saturday February 14 Farewell Haiti and Trip Home

After a later breakfast and a team picture we said our long drawn-out goodbyes to our new friends at the YWAM base. It was a bittersweet time. So many memories; so many experiences, but many of us were very ready to  head home. All except Chris, she wasn't ready to leave quite yet.

We spent quite awhile in the PAP airport with lots of people, waiting for our flight that had been delayed. Some of us weren't feeling the best; especially our welder.

We arrived at JFK with only a slight delay. After going through customs, we were met by a very friendly face. Elvin and Mary had their nice warm coach waiting at the curb for us, stocked with a wonderful supper of comfort food. We arrived back at the church at 12:45 am and were met by below-zero wind chills.

We praise God for the safety of our journey, and praise God for all of you family and friends who helped make this trip possible... you know who you are, and we are grateful!!

Friday February 13 Jobs completed!!

Our last day here was productive...

The road crew at Luben worked hard and finished their job.

The dedicated painting crew put in long hours, and by the end of the day the vivid yellow paint covered the whole building (and the painters)

The chain-link panels were completed and installed in the shop area, and shelving was built for storage.

Thursday February 12 Road Crew

First stop of the day; "Lovely Tire Shop."
Unfortunately the backhoe tire wasn't repaired as promised.

So while waiting on the tire to be fixed, we watched the ice delivery take place. It came off the truck in five-foot long blocks.

Some of today's road crew along with Pastor Bo from Luben, at the glorious moment of connecting our new road with the existing one.

As you can see, many of the village folks were watching the action. Some of us were amazed that we were able to get this far, but like Pastor Bo said, "With God, anything is possible!" He was so happy to see the progress.  Hopefully we will finish bringing it all up to grade tomorrow.

There was no shortage of helpers to assist us

Wednesday February 11 Park Cleanup

Sorry for the delay... The internet was down for awhile so this is a day late.

Today we again had a variety of tasks. The road crew was busy in Luben, welding and other activities were going on in the depot, more vivid yellow paint was being applied to the main building, and a crew was sent to the park to cut down some trees and do some weed-eating.

Terry Snow explained to us that the city of St. Marc has turned the upkeep of the park over to YWAM. Not only do they maintain it; they also make all decisions about what kinds of events are allowed to be held there. Terry also said that this is a great opportunity, because serving in this way allows YWAM to put actions behind their words.

At the park, some of us got to be "flaggers" as we waved our arms and gestured to try to keep vehicles from driving down the blocked-off street where a tree was being cut down. Others took turns edging with the weed-eater. All of us watched as both dead trees came down; one with a nest of bees in it. The Pettibone came in handy again as Freeman was lifted up wearing beekeeper's gear to spray the nest. When the tree finally toppled, the large crowd that had gathered rushed to the tree and made short work of scooping out the honeycomb and stuffing it into garbage bags. Several rats that escaped from the tree quickly met their demise as well.

Each day we experience new parts of Haitian culture; today Laura was the first of us to ride on a taxi... not IN a taxi, ON a taxi! Yes, in Haiti, taxis are motorcycles.

We are again thankful for safety as we went about our day, and continue to appreciate your prayers as we finish out our time here.

Tuesday February 10 Welding Project

When we first arrived in Haiti, we were on the bus going from the airport to St. Marc, and the head of maintenance who had come along asked which one of us was the welder.  Drew meekly raised his hand.  "Jesus loves you, and we have a wonderful plan for your life!" he said.  So Drew knew he had a busy week ahead. The first day he was able to go out to the village and see the project, but every day since, he has been welding on a steel framework with a chain-link center that will be used to make a cage to lock up all the tools in the new shop. Today he finished up the last panel, complete with a steel frame entry door. Next, he'll be welding some scraps from an old scissors lift into a heavy-duty ladder to reach the second level storage area in the shop. After that, there's more on the list.
